Govt yet to decide on takeover of Hindustan Cables by OFB

The government today said it is yet to take a decision on takeover of ailing Hindustan Cables Ltd (HCL) by Ordnance Factory Board, a PSU under the Defence Ministry.
The Department of Heavy Industry has been in talks with the Ministry in this regard.
"The Department of Defence Production recently set up an inter-departmental committee to look into the proposal for takeover of HCL by Ordnance Factory Board," Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Praful Patel informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
The panel had submitted its report to the Department of Defence Production, but no decision has been taken by it so far, he said.
The company, which was set up in 1952 at Rupparainpur (West Bengal), has units in different states.
However, HCL's units in West Bengal and Hyderabad producing Polythene Insulated Jelly Filled (PIJF) cables had not been in production since January 2003, as there is no requirement of these cables in BSNL/MTNL.
Similarly, the unit at Naini, Allahabad producing optical fibre cable had also become obsolete due to change in the product specification.
